The highly anticipated Inside Out 2 is now in theaters everywhere and has hit the $1 billion mark worldwide just after three weekends of release. While reviews acknowledge that the film does not pack the same punch as the original movie did in 2015, they are still positive overall. If you have watched the film, you know it has many endearing and amusing quotes throughout its 1-hour and 36-minute runtime. Here are our favorite quotes in Inside Out 2.

1: “Maybe this is what happens when you grow up. You feel less joy.”

When Joy is unable to send Riley’s core belief back to headquarters, she bursts into tears, realizing that Riley’s joy is dwindling as she grows up. While there are emotional moments throughout Inside Out 2, this is the most gut-punching one, reflecting the universal feeling most of us have as we enter adulthood — we stress so much that the youthful joy we once had fades away.

2: “You can’t just bottle us up!”

This clip has been shown all over social media, even before the film was released. When all the original core Emotions are locked up in a glass container by Embarrassment, Joy questions, “You can’t just bottle us up,” which is what she tries to do to Sadness in Inside Out. This shows that it isn’t healthy to bottle up our emotions but instead to express them as we feel them.

3: “We are suppressed emotions!”

When new Emotions like Envy and Anxiety take center stage, the original crew finds themselves pushed aside — locked in a glass container. While teens will feel plenty of emotions as they mature and may push other feelings away, these emotions are never truly gone. However, for the sake of the story, the old Emotions are suppressed to make way for the new kids in town.

4: “I’m sorry, I was just trying to protect her.”

Anxiety apologizes to Joy with tears when her excessive worries for Riley’s future lead to a panic attack. This is an emotional but ironic quote. Anxiety is only trying to protect us from danger, but sometimes it goes overboard. This feeling of dread and uneasiness isn’t the antagonist inside our heads: it can help us stay alert, make us aware of risks, and motivate us to solve problems.

5: “Do you know how hard it is to stay positive all the time?!”

Ironically, Joy says to the other Emotions in frustration how hard it is to always stay positive amid chaos. This illustrates how constant complaining can make it harder even for the most positive person to maintain a positive outlook on life. This detail in Inside Out 2 also shows that each Emotion has its own set of emotions in addition to the dominant emotion they display.

6: “You don’t get to choose who Riley is. Anxiety, you need to let her go.”

When Anxiety creates a whirlwind of chaos trying to undo her mistakes, Joy gently tells her to let go of Riley. This scene shows that no single emotion gets to control and define who we are as human beings. Though Joy and Anxiety have been at odds for the entire movie, Joy’s warmth encourages Anxiety to find comfort in release, ultimately working to break the chaotic spiral.

7: “Joy, Riley wants you.”

When Riley is trying to calm herself inside the penalty box from the anxiety attack, the console signals with yellow sparkles that she needs Joy, symbolizing our desperate need for joy to feel better and relax. With the arrival of Anxiety in Inside Out 2, Joy feels out of place in Riley’s teenage life. However, this touching moment reminds Joy that there is always room for her in Riley’s life.

8: “Oh my gosh! I’m Anxiety. Where can I put my stuff?”

This quote arrives with the introduction of Anxiety, characteristically high-energy and chaotic, as she races onto the screen with her arms outstretched, carrying a smattering of suitcases. These suitcases are the literal “baggage” that Anxiety carries with her, a concept originally intended for Guilt, one of the emotions that “auditioned” for the sequel but didn’t make it to the final cut.

9: “Anxiety would have a plan for that.”

While Anxiety is taking over headquarters, Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust go on their journey to the back of Riley’s mind, during which they uncover new elements like Deep Dark Secret, Sar-chasm, and the Stream of Consciousness. As they struggle to navigate these new challenges, Fear drones on about how much better prepared Anxiety would be for these challenges.

10: “Remember when we all finally came up to headquarters?” “That was like 30 seconds ago, Nostalgia.”

Here Are Our Favorite 18 ‘Inside Out 2’ Quotes: “Oh My Gosh! I’m Anxiety. Where Can I Put My Stuff?” | The Exploreist (9)

In Inside Out 2, Nostalgia appears twice as a supporting character, reminding everyone of the time when everyone was up at headquarters, which pairs well with Ennui’s dry-humored response. This scene also establishes a critical detail: if Nostalgia is somewhere in headquarters, waiting for the right moment to appear, there must be even more emotions viewers have yet to see.

11: “Welp, there’s a preview of the next 10 years.”

Here Are Our Favorite 18 ‘Inside Out 2’ Quotes: “Oh My Gosh! I’m Anxiety. Where Can I Put My Stuff?” | The Exploreist (10)

Just like Inside Out, the sequel occasionally departs from Riley’s head to enter the minds of Riley’s parents, Grace, and Brie. One such moment occurs in reaction to Riley’s breakdown about hockey camp when she screams, “I’m the worst.” The response from mom’s Anger is a funny, relatable line for many parents who have also watched their kids stumble through the turmoil of puberty.

12: “My job is to protect her from the scary stuff she can’t see. I plan for the future.”

Here Are Our Favorite 18 ‘Inside Out 2’ Quotes: “Oh My Gosh! I’m Anxiety. Where Can I Put My Stuff?” | The Exploreist (11)

Adults and kids alike can understand the desire to “plan for the future” in an attempt to control things that they ultimately cannot control. This line comes after Anxiety breaks down the role of all of Riley’s core Emotions, explaining, for example, that Fear “protects her from the scary stuff she can see.” It is another example of how Inside Out 2’s script makes the intangible tangible.

13: “Why don’t we take a seat in our special chair?”

Once Anxiety’s reign of terror is over, the Emotions all learn to work together in a way that benefits Riley the most rather than against each other — the presence of Anxiety’s new special chair is proof of that. When Anxiety starts to go off the rails and spiral, Joy helps calm her by taking her to the massage chair with candles and a hot cup of “Anxie-Tea,” one of the film’s fun Easter eggs.

14: “That’s not going to haunt us for the rest of our lives at all…”

Maybe Joy isn’t the best Emotion to handle Riley’s exchange with Valentina. Anxiety tries to prevent an overexcited reaction but fails, leading to a cringy moment where Riley does finger guns and says, “Yeah, yeah.” All the Emotions are horrified, with Anxiety frantically saying, “That’s not going to haunt us for the rest of our lives at all,” while Embarrassment slams his head on the console.

15: “I’m Envy! Woah, look at your hair!”

Here Are Our Favorite 18 ‘Inside Out 2’ Quotes: “Oh My Gosh! I’m Anxiety. Where Can I Put My Stuff?” | The Exploreist (12)

When Envy makes her debut, climbing onto the console — yeah, she is the tiniest of all Emotions — she’s immediately jealous of Disgust’s bright green hair. In the same breath, Envy says, “I’m Envy!” and “Woah, look at your hair!” Disgust is absolutely not having it and quips back, “Oh yeah, not happening.” Envy then has the same reaction toward Valentina’s red strands of hair. How cute!

16: “I’m not good enough.”

In Inside Out 2, core memories can develop into beliefs, a tree-like structure that drives Riley emotionally. When Anxiety takes over, she destroys the old belief system and creates a new one, which causes the belief to shift from “I’m a good person” to “I’m not good enough.” Anxiety fails to understand that without Joy, self-doubt will continue to grow and thrive in Riley’s mind.

17: “Okay. You and I are going to be friends.”

One of the funnier lines in the movie is said by Fear, who is amazed by Anxiety’s ability to project fear onto the future. As the emotions decide how to socially navigate through hockey camp, Anxiety throws out the idea that if Riley doesn’t make friends with the Firehawks, she might be doomed forever, predicting a horrifying scenario where “she finally arrives at high school, has no friend, eats alone, and only the teachers know her name.”

18: “You’ve got a real sweaty palm there, buddy.”

Here Are Our Favorite 18 ‘Inside Out 2’ Quotes: “Oh My Gosh! I’m Anxiety. Where Can I Put My Stuff?” | The Exploreist (13)

When Joy tries to introduce herself to Embarrassment, who is busy hiding behind his hand and backing away, her attempt to shake his hand turns into an attempted fist bump and eventually lands on an uncomfortable high five. When Joy finally makes contact, she says, “You’ve got a real sweaty palm there, buddy.” Embarrassment blushes and immediately pulls up his hoodie to hide!
